Course Description
A mainly practical introduction to Chinese-English comparative/contrastive analysis for translators/interpreters. We will begin with Linguistics, starting with Morphology and Syntax, then Semantics, Pragmatics and Discourse, Phonetics and Phonology. Then we'll move on to Rhetoric, Stylistics and Register in comparative context. |

Course Objectives
1) Practice or reinforce analytical abilities at different levels of analysis in both Chinese and English.
2) Learn the basics of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics in so far as they relate to Chinese/English comparison, and test these concepts out.
3) Learn how rhetoric applies to translation and hone rhetorical skills. |

課程要求 |
Requirements:
1) On a weekly basis: a) an analysis of two short prose samples and their translations. b) quizzes.
2) Every few classes: a presentation/speech of some sort.
3) A final project on some aspect of contrastive analysis using corpora data. |
